Madrid, 23 April 2021

The Abertis Foundation today received the PONLE FRENO Award for its road safety campaign #PuedoEsperar (I Can Wait), a high-impact campaign promoted by the Foundation, in collaboration with Movistar and Yelmo Cines, to highlight and raise awareness of the risk of misusing mobile phones and instant messaging apps while driving. The award was accepted by the chairwoman of the Abertis Foundation, Elena Salgado.

Accidents involving the misuse of mobile phones at the wheel claim almost as many lives as those involving a drunk driver. Using Whatsapp, or other instant messaging apps, while driving increases the risk of an accident by 134%, yet 43% of young people use it while behind the wheel.

The award-winning campaign aims to raise awareness of this danger by conveying a powerful message. This creative media campaign is based on the real-life testimony of Enzo, a young man who suffered very serious and life-changing injuries as a result of a traffic accident caused by answering a text message while at the wheel. Its aim is to make the public think about the importance of being able to wait and decide how and when to use a mobile phone while driving.

PONLE FRENO is the most significant social action promoted by the Atresmedia group in its history together with the AXA Foundation. The Awards, now in their 13th year, are designed to recognise the work of individuals and organisations in their efforts to improve road safety and reduce the number of road traffic victims.
