Castellet Castle, the abertis foundation headquarters and Mediterranean Ecosystem Biosphere Reserves centre, has hosted its first conference since its recent selection by UNESCO. Dr Martí Boada, a scientist from the ICTA (Institute of Environmental Science and Technology) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the environmental adviser to the abertis foundation, participated in the conference, which was entitled Forest products in viti-viniculture. Oenology and cork experts also attended.
Although they often go unnoticed, there are significant links between forestry and viti-viniculture. Various forest products are used in viti-viniculture, such as cork for bottle stoppers, sawn timber from different tree species for staves and supports for trellises. Moreover, vine cultivation and forest areas make up the Mediterranean agroforestry mosaic, a landscape of great cultural value and biodiversity. Greater synergy between the two subsectors creates an opportunity to support sustainable forest management and more competitive wine production, in the context of promoting products from the same area and differentiation based on local characteristics.
