The UNESCO International Centre for Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves (CIURBN), based at the headquarters of the Abertis Foundation in Castellet Castle (Barcelona), has incorporated two new reserves into its international network – the protected areas of Dana and Mujib in Jordan -, thus further illustrating its commitment to cooperation between both coastlines of the Mediterranean.
To formalise the inclusion of these reserves, a delegation from Abertis and the Abertis Foundation formed by Josep Maria Coronas, Secretary General and General Counsel of Corporate Affairs; Sergi Loughney, Director of Institutional Relations and CSR and Director of the Abertis Foundation; and Georgina Flamme, Manager of the Abertis Foundation, travelled to Jordan to find out first-hand about the new reserves in the international network.
They were received by Dr. Maen Smadi, Head of the Reserves Section of the Jordanian Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature; Dr. Mervat Bataresh, Head of Environmental Education of the Royal Society for Conservation of Nature; Aránzazu Bañón, the Ambassador of Spain in Amman; and Javier Soria, the Spanish consul in the Jordanian capital.
During its visit to Amman, the Abertis Foundation was awarded a prize by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in recognition of its efforts to foster the Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve Network via its UNESCO International Centre, a groundbreaking public-private partnership with the Government of Spain via the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and the Environment and under the auspices of the international organisation.
The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) is a body dedicated to the protection, conservation and management of the natural resources of Jordan and presided over by His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan Bin Talal.

The Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain, at its meeting on June 22, 2021, approved the renewal of the agreement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) with the aim that our country will continue to host the UNESCO International Center forMediterranean Biosphere Reserves, headquarters of the Abertis Foundation, for another six years.
