The Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain, at its meeting on June 22, 2021, approved the renewal of the agreement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) with the aim that our country will continue to host the UNESCO International Center forMediterranean Biosphere Reserves, headquarters of the Abertis Foundation, for another six years.

Four years ago the European Commission awarded the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the UNESCO International Centre for Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves (UNESCOMED),headquarters of the Abertis Foundation, the Erasmus+ project Italy, an initiative whose main objective is to strengthen and improve academic activity between countries in the Mediterranean basin (Spain, France and) and Moroccan and Lebanese institutions, in the context of the Mediterranean BiosphereReserves.

On October 29, the students of the ICTA-UAB Master of Interdisciplinary Studies in Environmental, Economic and Social Sustainability were able to attend again the inauguration of the new academic year of the International University Campus for Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves. This Campus was created five years ago through an agreement between the Abertis Foundation and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).

The Spanish cabinet, at the proposal of the Ministry forEcological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and the Ministry ofForeign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, has authorised thesigning of the agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United NationsEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to continuehosting the International Centre for Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves in our country.

The Abertis Foundation, through the Unesco International Centre on MediterraneanBiosphere Reserves (CIURBM), will promote a study for the recovery of the Terres del’Ebre biosphere reserve, which will focus on the natural spaces that have remained severely affected by the effects of the Storm Gloria this week. According to the director of the Foundation, Sergi Loughney, “with this study, we want to contribute to the generation of resources for the recovery of the area, which has a very high natural value, and for thiswe will also seek the collaboration of the administrations and entities involved”.

The Abertis Foundation, together with UNESCO and the Ministry for Ecological Transition, through the National Parks Autonomous Agency, has promoted the "Castellet Declaration for the Protection of Biodiversity", a manifesto to warn of the serious consequences that the current rate of biodiversity loss may have on the planet and the achievement of the United Nations sustainable development goals, including those related to poverty, hunger and health.
